New Year’s Eve Celebrations Around the World

“What are your New Year’s Eve plans?” This is probably the most common question you’ll hear in December. The year’s final night is something extraordinary — a farewell to the old and a hopeful welcome to a prosperous, exciting, and joyful new year. But where can you experience the most spectacular celebrations? Let’s take a look.

Back to the Future

With some imagination — and a generous budget — you can celebrate New Year’s Eve both first and last. The Pacific islands of Tonga, Samoa, and Kiribati are the first to ring in the new year. If you want to extend the last day of the year, head to Howland and Baker Islands near the US, where the clock strikes midnight last.

Spectacular Fireworks

New Year’s Eve wouldn’t be complete without dazzling fireworks displays.

Cities like Sydney and Dubai offer breathtaking shows. Sydney’s fireworks, themed differently each year, attract about 1.5 million visitors and cost six million dollars. Over 8.5 tons of pyrotechnics light up the sky, with the Harbour Bridge adorned in stunning light installations.

Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world, is the centrepiece of its celebration. The 30-minute show costs six million dollars and requires nearly a year of planning, with technicians spending 5000 hours to perfect every detail.

Another iconic tradition is the Ball Drop at Times Square, New York. Since 1907 — aside from interruptions during World War II — a ball descends from One Times Square at 11:59 PM, marking the year’s final moments.

Traditions and Superstitions Worldwide

The New Year is celebrated with fascinating customs and beliefs aimed at attracting luck, health, and happiness.

  • Japan: 108 Bell Rings
In Japan, the new year begins with 108 bell rings, a Buddhist tradition that purges the year’s sins and brings good fortune. A smile at midnight is said to enhance the year’s luck.
  • Italy: Out with the Old
In Italy, tossing old blankets and cushions out symbolizes clearing out the past to make room for the future.
  • Germany: Lead Pouring
A traditional German custom involves melting lead and pouring it into cold water. The resulting shapes predict the year ahead — a star for happiness, a ball for good fortune, and a crown for wealth.
  • Philippines: Circles Everywhere
Round objects symbolize wealth and prosperity in the Philippines. People wear polka-dot clothing, eat round fruits, and use round plates to usher in financial success.

How Do You Celebrate New Year’s Eve?

Whether you stay at home or travel far, the most important thing is to enjoy the moment. May the new year bring you joy, success, and unforgettable experiences.

Happy New Year!
