Biblical Phrases in Modern English

The Bible is not only a religious and literary cornerstone but also a rich source of expressions that—often without us realizing—have found their way into everyday speech. Many of these phrases have become firmly embedded in our language, frequently losing their original theological context in the process.

In this article, we present a selection of commonly used biblical phrases in modern English, explore their origins and meanings, and clarify how to use them correctly.

Common Biblical Phrases in Everyday Use

  1. "Oh my God!"
Now widely used to express surprise, frustration, or amazement. Originally, this was a direct invocation of God, appearing for example in the Psalms: "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" (Psalm 22:2). While the phrase has largely lost its religious undertone, it remains rooted in a deep theological context.

  2. "God help me!" / "God forbid!"
Historically a cry for help or protection, today often used ironically or as an exclamation. The Bible is full of calls for divine assistance, such as in Psalm 70:1: "Make haste, O God, to deliver me! O Lord, make haste to help me!"

  3. "And the Word became flesh."
A central phrase from the Gospel of John (John 1:14): "And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us." It refers to the Incarnation—God becoming human in the form of Jesus Christ. In modern use, the phrase may describe the realization of an idea into something tangible.

  4. "Let him who is without sin cast the first stone."
Spoken by Jesus in John 8:7 to a crowd ready to stone an adulterous woman. Today, the phrase serves as a reminder that no one is without fault and that we should refrain from judging others.

  5. "To carry one’s cross."
Now used to describe bearing life's hardships or personal burdens. Its origin lies in Jesus' words in Mark 8:34: "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me."

  6. "To fall into temptation."
Used today to describe giving in to a desire, usually with negative consequences. Biblically, it relates to the story of Adam and Eve succumbing to the serpent's temptation in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3).

  7. "Saved by a miracle."
An expression for escaping danger in an extraordinary or inexplicable way. In Scripture, miracles are acts of divine intervention—such as healings or Jesus walking on water (Matthew 14:25).

  8. "Don’t be a Judas."
A common phrase used to describe someone who betrays another. It refers to Judas Iscariot, the disciple who betrayed Jesus for thirty pieces of silver (Matthew 26:14–16). While widely understood, the phrase should be used with sensitivity due to potential cultural implications.

  9. "He had an epiphany."
A phrase for a sudden realization or moment of insight. It recalls Paul’s conversion on the road to Damascus (Acts 9:3), when he was struck by a heavenly light—a symbol of revelation and transformation.

Conclusion: The Bible Still Speaks—Through Language

Biblical phrases have become an enduring part of modern language. Though they are often used outside of religious contexts, they carry cultural, historical, and linguistic significance.

That said, when using such expressions—especially in informal or humorous settings—it is wise to be mindful of tone and context, particularly in written or professional communication.
