Translation of a bilingual catalogue into two languages in a format that does not allow for text editing and a complete preservation of the graphic design

Kolpa d.d. is one of the leading manufacturers of bathroom equipment in Central and Southeast Europe. The top Kolpa San bathroom products and the Kerrock programme of composite materials are known for their exceptional technical characteristics and performance.

The company’s head office is located in Metlika in the south of Slovenia. Kolpa is an export-oriented company that sells as many as 80% of their products to European markets.

THE CHALLENGE AND OUR APPROACH

Kolpa San came to us because they needed a translation of a bilingual catalogue.

They sent us bilingual files (in Croatian and Slovenian) in the .cad format. The AutoCAD software they were created in is a professional design software for architects, installation professionals and other industry experts, however the created files do not allow for text editing or translation.

Due to the complexity of the project and the specific format we had never worked with before, we had to develop a new approach for the translation of the Kolpa d.d. texts. The project thus included the entire in-house team – from the IT specialist to the Translation Manager, the Business Development Manager and the project managers, the translators, proofreaders and graphic designers.

In addition to the inability to translate in the .cad format, the bilingual format of the document was also a challenge. It was in Croatian and Slovenian whereas the client needed a translation of the Croatian text into German and a translation of the Slovenian text into English. By developing our own multi-phase process, which allows for a precise and consistent bilingual professional translation while completely preserving the graphic design and converting the translation into the format the client requested, the project was finished successfully and in due time.

At Kolpa, d.d. Metlika, we needed a translation of the extensive technical Kolpa San catalogue with all the technical drawings (installation drawings, massage system plans etc.) into English and German.
Since this was a technical professional text, the catalogue was in a format that does not allow editing.
